History that Inspires
by Terry Coy
"The younger generation just simply does not know the history of missions, especially Baptist missions. They don't even know who Lottie Moon was!" Thus goes a common, and mostly legitimate, complaint for the "older" generation. Well, all kinds of arguments can be made for or against keeping Southern Baptist terminology, names, programs, and so on. The bottom line, however, is that we have a legacy that is worth telling in some form or fashion. Missions were not invented in this generation. Sacrifice is nothing new. Going in faith and being used by God in amazing ways is not just of this century.
So, figure out ways to tell the story. Introduce students to William Carey, Adoniram Judson, Lottie Moon, and others that inspire, instruct, and teach about going, serving, and sacrificing. Let me suggest a simple book to hand out, to use as a study, to steal ideas from for sermons (I am confident the author wouldn't mind!). It is Danny Akin's Five Who Changed the World, which includes biblical sermons built around the lives of the three mentioned above and also Bill Wallace and Jim Elliot. If nothing else, it will inspire college students to seriously consider the cost of following Jesus. The book can be ordered directly from Southeastern Seminary by calling 919-761-2270. Just a recommendation from one who already knew the stories, read them again, and was convicted and moved once more.
